How to Clean Tile Grout by Yourself

tile groutThe grout between the tiles in your kitchen, bathroom or anywhere else in your home is starting to look, and probably is quite dirty? Maybe it’s time to do something about it? Here is how to clean grout easily and efficiently, and best of all – safely with a homemade cleaning solution. But, before you start with the cleaning:

Keep in mind the following precautions:

#1 Wear gloves and old clothes because bleach will ruin textile and can irritate your skin.
#2To be extra careful, you can wear safety glasses, to keep the eyes safe from accidental bleach splashes
#3 Open the windows for better ventilation because the fumes from the bleach can be irritating and even harmful. If you have a respirator, you can wear it while applying the paste made from bleach and baking soda.
#4 Use a cloth or rag to clean off the grout cleaner, which you can salvage, or don’t mind getting bleached. Chlorine bleach can discolour any coloured grout, but oxygenated bleach does not. Be careful when cleaning coloured grout though.

And now, let’s get to the point!

How to make DIY cleaning solutions

Prepare the solution for cleaning the grout in your home. It is made up of only two ingredients:

  • ¼ cup of bleach
  • ¾ cup of baking soda

Mix the two, so that you get a thick paste-like substance.

Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from the bleach, and apply the paste on the dirty grout. Let it sit for about 10 minutes. Scrub the grout with a toothbrush so that the cleaner gets deeper into the grout and then wait for another 10 minutes.

After that rinse off the paste from the grout with a shower head or if not – with a damp cloth. Rinse it often and make sure you get all of the grout cleaners out of the grout. It may look darker because it is wet, but when it dries up it will be sparkling clean!

Some other home-made grout cleaning solutions you can try include:

  • 7 cups of warm water
  • 1/3 cup of ammonia
  • 1/2 cup of baking soda
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar

Mix well, and spray with the help of a spray bottle. Scrub the grout with a brush after 5 minutes and then rinse off with a damp cloth or shower head.

Make a thick paste by mixing hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Apply it to the grout and let it sit for 10 minutes. Scrub the grout with a toothbrush or other brush, and then rinse off. Make a mix of warm water and oxygen bleach and spray it on the grout. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then scrub it with a brush.
